Ingredients

  • 1 can baked beans (16 oz)
  • 1 strip bacon
  • 3 tbsp bbq sauce
  • 1 tsp Worchestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp tomato puré
  • 3 tbsp bourbon
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp brown sugar
  • 0.5 tbsp butter (for frying)

Instructions

  • Start by frying the bacon in a pan with a bit of butter on medium heat. Once it is properly fried, pick it up, chop it finely and add back to the pan. Remove the pan from the hob.
  • Now add the bourbon and let it simmer for a few minutes using the residual heat in the pan. We want to get rid of some of the alcohol. If/when the simmering stops, put the pan back on the hob.
  • Add the rest of the ingredients and let it simmer for 10 minutes. Stir regularly and turn down the heat if needed, make sure it doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pan.
  • If you want a bit more sweetness, just add some more brown sugar. If you want more heat, chop down your favorite chili. The beans can always be tweaked to suit your personal preferences. This recipe is a well balanced foundation.
