Bourbon beans! It doesn’t get much better than this. A classic side dish which is easy to make in less than 30 minutes. This recipe is based on one (1) can of beans. That means it’s real simple to scale up by simply multiplying the ingredients by the number of cans.

Serves: 4

Ingredients

ImperialMetric
1 can (16 oz) baked beans
1 strip bacon
3 tbsp bbq-sauce
1 tsp Worchestershire-sauce
1 tbsp tomato puré
3 tbsp bourbon
0.5 tsp salt
2 tsp brown sugar
0.5 tbsp butter (for frying)
1 can (400 g) baked beans
1 strip bacon
3 tbsp bbq-sauce
1 tsp Worchestershire-sauce
1 tbsp tomato puré
3 tbsp bourbon
0.5 tsp salt
2 tsp brown sugar
0.5 tbsp butter (for frying)

Instructions

Start by frying the bacon in a pan with a bit of butter on medium heat. Once it is properly fried, pick it up, chop it finely and add back to the pan. Remove the pan from the hob. Now add the bourbon and let it simmer for a few minutes using the residual heat in the pan. We want to get rid of some of the alcohol. If/when the simmering stops, put the pan back on the hob.

Add the rest of the ingredients and let it simmer for 10 minutes. Stir regularly and turn down the heat if needed, make sure it doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pan.

If you want a bit more sweetness, just add some more brown sugar. If you want more heat, chop down your favorite chili. The beans can always be tweaked to suit your personal preferences. This recipe is a well balanced foundation.
